C. Procedures Offered by More Than One Type of Specialist
Because all dental specialist are qualified as dentists prior to obtaining a specialist license, many procedures can be delivered by different specialists. Examples are: fillings, implants, most cosmetic dental procedures, etc.
1. Endodontist (Spanish = Endodoncista):
A dental specialist focussing on diseases and treatment of the internal structure of the teeth; primarily the pulp, but also including tissues surrounding the tooth root (e.g. periodontal ligaments). Pulp is mainly comprised of nerve tissue and blood vessels. By far the most common procedure performed by an endodontist is root canal treatment. This involves removal of infected dental pulp, cleaning and sealing of the root canal, and finally restoration of the upper tooth, often by way of a dental crown.
The objective of root canal treatment is the preservation of the natural tooth, in order to avoid the need for a dental bridge or dental implant.
2. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (Spanish = Cirujano Oral Y Maxilofacial)*
A dental specialist focussing on surgical treatment of diseases, defects and injuries of the oral and maxillofacial region (maxillo meaning upper jaw).*Note Cirujano dentista, is a synonym for dentista or odontólogo; for which the equivalent in North America would be DDS or dentist.
3. Periodontist (Spanish = Periodoncista)
A dental specialist focussing on diseases and treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth, including gums, periodontal ligaments and jaw bone.
4. Prosthodontist (Spanish = Protesista)
A dental specialist focussing on the replacement of missing teeth and oral structures with artificial devices (i.e. prosthesis). Examples include: dentures, crowns, bridges, veneers and replacement teeth supported by dental implants.
